The Semi-annual Oscillation and Antarctic Climate. Part 3: the Role of Near-surface Wind Speed and Cloudiness
نویسنده
چکیده
The interactions between the semi-annual oscillation (SAO), near-surface wind speed and cloudiness at seven Antarctic stations are described, as is how near-surface temperature is affected. A firmly established half-yearly wave, in both the mean annual cycle of wind speed and of cloudiness, was found at two stations with limited local disturbances: Halley and Faraday. Following a significant weakening of the SAO since the late 1970s, the annual cycles of wind speed and cloudiness at these stations have changed accordingly: increased wind speed and cloudiness in solstitial months and a decrease in the equinoctial months. At Halley, where no significant long-term temperature trends are detectable, this explains the observed changes in the seasonal temperature cycle. At Faraday, annual mean wind speed and cloudiness are negatively correlated to SAO strength, and as a result both have recently increased. Based on the correlation between wind speed and temperature changes, we estimate a ‘background’ (independent of circulation changes) Antarctic warming trend of 1.2990.48°C per century. Climate change caused the changes in earth surface temperature, precipitation, sea surface level, wind speeds, wave heights, coastlines, etc. Estimation of the effect of climate change is of great importance in long-term studies of such parameters. In this study, the effect of climate change on average wind speed near Chabahar, Gulf of Oman is assessed until the year 2100. For this purpose, win...

[1] The reasons for the inter-annual variability of dust transport from the Sahara across the Atlantic are not well-understood. Here we address this issue by defining three new climate indices that capture the position and intensity of the zone of near-surface convergence over West Africa, a part of the global Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). We then relate these indices to a 38-year reco...
متن کاملClimate modes in southern high latitudes and their impacts on Antarctic sea ice
[1] This study investigates the influence of high-latitude climate variability on the Antarctic sea ice distribution. The climate variability examined here includes distinct climate modes, such as the Southern Annular Mode (SAM), quasi-stationary wave-3 pattern, Pacific South American pattern (PSA) and Semi-Annual Oscillation (SAO). The results reveal that the largest impact comes from PSA in t...

Economic evaluation of 12 MW grid-connected wind farms and PV power plants in two regions in Northern Cyprus for electricity generation was investigated. The wind speed, sunshine duration, and solar global radiation characteristics were analyzed using monthly data collected over 17 years (2000-2016) for Girne and nine years (2008-2016) for Lefkoşa, which were measured at various heights. The re...

High costs, unreliable resources for long term use and extensive negative impact on our environment are such problems associated with traditional sources of energy and fossil fuels which make us move toward implementation of renewable sources of energy. Fossil fuel pollution and reserve depletion in oil producing countries caused by increasing demands, make wind energy an attractive source of e...
